ABC partners with US media literacy enterprise to fight faux news

The ABC has joined forces with one of the United States’ leading schooling companies for the second annual Media Literacy Week to fight the spread of spin, misinformation, and “faux information” around the sector. The inaugural partnership between the ABC and the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) will equip college students and teachers with the talents to become essential thinkers, effective communicators, and active residents in a generation of mass media, famous lifestyles, and digital technology.

The 2019 Media Literacy Week, from 21-25 October, will function special activities throughout Australia and the USA to assist in navigating the information panorama, inclusive of News Champions Youth Forum: Australian students will lead a dialogue on how news can support and engage young people, in a -day media literacy summit at the Museum of Australian Democracy. Fighting fake news: Education professionals at Washington’s Newseum will hold a loose virtual webinar on sorting facts from fiction to Australian instructors.

Media makers panel: ABC Education and the Australian Council for Educational Leadership will host an occasion for teachers on the challenges of reporting in the technology of false facts, presenting ABC News Breakfast host Michael Rowland, presenter Benjamin Law, and RMIT/ABC Fact Check’s Sushi Das. In the US, NAMLE and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) will sell the free PBS Media Literacy Educator Certification via the KQED program to teach students to assume critically about media intake and advent.
