On Oct. Eight, hundreds of wide-eyed students filed into the Study Abroad Fair, choosing dozens of flyers and writing their emails on every list they might find on their way to magnificence. But for those headed closer to South Campus, UCLA makes it harder to satisfy the hopes of the one. About 25% of students take a look abroad every year, which is in line with the UCLA International Education Office.
What it fails to mention, however, is the disproportion between STEM and non-STEM students who choose to take part. Over the decade, thousands of students at UCLA alone have studied overseas—yet an awesome 70% of them are non-STEM college students. Even worse, there are discrepancies between the arts and STEM majors, with majors such as economics and biology being more readily available to examine than majors underneath engineering.
As a history student analyzing overseas in Prague this quarter, it was smooth for me to take a quarter off from my ordinary UCLA path load and discover lessons that might work for me foremost. But for students whose path loads aren’t as flexible, the opportunity to take a look overseas is not anything greater than an unreachable dream. Interested college students who juggle majors with heavier paths masses need to be centered on their educational opportunities – not preventing their university from the right to look abroad.
UCLA has to make reading overseas an opportunity for all students by imparting mentoring packages early for fascinated novices and students with confining majors. The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science saw less than 4% of its student population observe overseas within 10 years. As of 2018, there were slightly more than 3,600 undergraduate engineering students. And though it’s a visible population on campus, the alternatives for studying overseas can feel disproportionally constrained.
Derek Gunny, a third-12 months mechanical engineering student studying overseas this fall, said this is because the course load is so dense, making it difficult for engineers to look abroad and graduate in 4 years.
